ARJBack
Version 1.2
by Gary Chanson
ARJBack is Copyright 1993 by Gary Chanson and Starquest
Systems. No restrictions are placed on the non-commercial
use of this program. This program and its documentation
may be copied and re-distributed provided that they are
not changed and no fee is charged for them. An exception
is granted to not-for-profit user's groups, which are
authorized to charge a nominal fee for materials and
handling.
Description:
ARJBack is a menu-driven front end for hard disk backups using the
archive utility ARJ. ARJ supports disk backups to multiple
floppies with many powerful options. A major impediment to the use
of this system for many users is remembering the multitude of
command line switches required to enable the appropriate options.
ARJBack answers this limitation by providing a menu-drive interface
which can be controlled from the keyboard or a mouse. A batch file
called ARJRSTOR.BAT is also provided for restoring a hard disk from
a set of ARJ backup files.
Installation:
To install ARJBack, copy the distribution files to a sub-directory
on the DOS search path. If you create a new sub-directory for this
program, you should also add this directory to the PATH= statement
in AUTOEXEC.BAT. ARJBACK.MEN must be in the same directory as
ARJBACK.EXE or it will not be found. ARJ.EXE version 2.30 or
higher must also be available for this program to operate. Prior
versions do not support some of the options used and may react
unpredictably to their use.
Usage:
To run, enter:
ARJBACK [srce_path] [dest_path]
If no source path is entered, the current directory will be the
default path. If no destination path is entered, the default
destination is A:\.
ARJBack will then display the menu and turn on the mouse cursor if
a mouse is available. Menu selections can be activated by pressing the
indicated key or by moving the mouse until the mouse cursor is over the
desired selection and then pressing the left button on the mouse.
Pressing the right button aborts the program.

figure 1 - ARJBack menu.
S> Source
Sets the source directory from which all files and sub-directories
will be backed up. When selected, the current source will be
displayed and you will be prompted for a source path. You can edit
the displayed string or press ESC to clear it to enter a new
string.
D> Destination
Sets the destination directory from which all files and sub-
directories will be backed up. When selected, the current
destination will be displayed and you will be prompted for a
destination path. You can edit the displayed string or press ESC
to clear it to enter a new string.
W> Set drive for work files
Sets the path for ARJ work files. If your system has a RAM disk at
least as large as the destination disk, you should enter its path
here. If an environment variable named TEMP exists, ARJBack will
set the work drive automatically. If the destination is a hard
disk, no work drive should be specified.
N> Archive file Name
Sets the name of the archive file created. If no extension is
specified, .ARJ is used for the first volume and .Ann is used for
subsequent volumes. If the extension .000 is specified, 3 digit
index numbers are used.
I> Index file
Sets the name and path of the index file. This file will record
the contents of each volume created by ARJ and can be used to find
individual files when needed. Enter a blank string to disable the
index file option.
V> Volume size
Sets the size for each volume. If no size is specified, ARJ
will automatically set it to the size of the destination disk.
Standard disk sizes are 360, 720, 1200, and 1440. Other sizes
must be specified in bytes. 100K is the same as 100000.
X> split files between volumes
If this option is enabled, ARJ will fill each volume and split the
last file in each volume between it and the next volume.
M> backup Mode
Backup modes are `all files', `changed files' (files with the
archive attribute set) and `newer files' (files with date stamps
newer than in an existing destination archive).
H> include Hidden and system files
If this option is enabled, hidden and system files will be
included. With it disabled, selective backups can be done by
setting the Hidden attribute on the files and sub_directories
which should be excluded.
A> clear source file Archive attribute
If this option is enabled, ARJ will reset the archive attributes
on all backed up files.
T> Test work files for errors
If this option is enabled, ARJ will do a CRC test of each file in
each volume before writing the volume to the destination disk.
After writing the volume to the destination disk, ARJ will read it
back and compare it to the work file to assure it integrity. This
option takes considerable time, but is highly recommended!
E> Execute command before each volume
If a command is specified, it will be executed before each volume
(after the "next volume" prompt).
C> enter Commands between volumes
If this option is enabled, ARJ will pause between volumes and run
COMMAND.COM. You can enter any commands required. Enter EXIT to
continue backup.
F> Format destination disks
If this option is enabled, ARJ will format the destination disk
before creating each volume.
P> Pause between volumes
If this option is enabled, ARJ will pause before each volume and
wait for a response.
K> save configuration
If this function is selected, the current configuration will be
save as the default configuration.
R> Restart interrupted backup
If ARJ is unable to write a volume to the destination disk, it
will terminate the operation. If this happens, you can use this
option to restart it. You will first be prompted for the volume
number to restart at. This should be the number of the volume in
which the error occurred. Then you will be prompted for the name
of the file to restart at followed by the offset into the file.
You can find this information by inspecting the BACKUP.INX file.
Enter both the file name and the offset exactly as it appears in
the index file.
G> Start backup
Warning:
It is quite possible to generate a command line too long to pass
to ARJ.EXE by selecting too many options or by specifying long
commands. If ARJ fails to operator or performs strangely, try
removing commands or specifying fewer options.
Restoring:
ARJRSTOR.BAT is provided for restoring drives backed up using
ARJBack. To restore, enter:
ARJRSTOR source [destination]
To restore individual files, examine the index file to determine
which volume contains the desired files, and use ARJ to extract
them.
